Tues 18th Oct Howick but not as we know it!

If you have been to the Scottish border town of Howick you will have experienced the dour, depressing atmosphere that seems to surround the town. This Howick (pronounced How ick) couldn’t be more different. A historical village has been recreated using different buildings from around New Zealand. This seems to be a popular method of moving home. If you love your house but want a different location, just slice up the house pop it onto a trailer and move to your next site simple!

But before we start it’s time for cake. Folks this delightful almond and lemon tart has shot to the top of the list. Phil’s carrot cake was pretty special too.

Back to the tour, when the settlers (retired soldiers) arrived they had been promised cottages and land and this is what they got!
Can you trust politicians  eh!
Eventually they got their cottages, size according to your rank. Guess what the top dogs got the biggest houses.

Most of the buildings have been restored and furnished.

They used newspapers to decorate the walls and keep out the draughts.
The village had a court house

Pub not open shame

Outside loo

Several school buildings

Anyone recognise these?

Or did you have one of these?

Finally the big house, this was built for people with money.

This was a great day out especially as the weather was changeable.
Tomorrow thunderstorms are predicted.
